Strait of Hormuz tensions deepen as Iran-US dispute escalates

Tensions over the Strait of Hormuz are intensifying as Iran asserts control over the strategic waterway, saying it is a sovereign responsibility shared with Oman and not the United States.

Tehran says the strait remains open but restricted for adversaries, and insists that all maritime movement through the key chokepoint must be coordinated with Iranian authorities. However, shipping activity remains below pre-war levels despite a slight increase in vessel traffic.

The Strait of Hormuz has become a central point of contention in ongoing negotiations aimed at ending the war, alongside disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief, frozen assets and war reparations.

The United States’ naval blockade and Iran’s demands for lifting restrictions on its vessels have further complicated diplomatic efforts. Tehran is also seeking security guarantees to prevent renewed cycles of conflict.

As tensions persist, uncertainty continues over whether diplomacy can prevent further escalation in one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
